The synagogue in Levice , a Slovak town in the district of the same name , was built in 1853. According to other sources, however, it was not rebuilt in 1883 but rebuilt.

history

In the middle of the 19th century, the Levice fortifications were demolished and the moat filled in. A synagogue was built at one point of the moat (which repeatedly led to problems because the ground was not sufficiently solidified). The building was originally built by the neological reform community and had two corner turrets on the west side of the gable. This contradicted the building regulations of the Orthodox community, and when they later merged and decided in favor of pro ante status , these were demolished in 1883 and renovation work carried out.

It was used for church services until June 1944, after which it was part of the ghetto in which the Jews were imprisoned before their deportation.

After the war it belonged to the Jewish community until 1967, which then sold the building to the state. It then served as a furniture store for several years. It was poorly maintained and in poor condition. In 2012, however, extensive renovations were carried out and the building has been open to the public since then and is used as a cultural center.

architecture

The synagogue building cannot be assigned to any clear architectural style. The entrance area on the west side is based on Renaissance church buildings . The long sides are divided into three fields by massive pillars. There are also excellent entrances there. The fields have three pair of arched windows on the lower level and an oculus above each .

Inside, on the sides at the level of the oculi, are the galleries of the women, which are supported by cast-iron columns.
