Gastone Pierini (born September 27, 1899 in Ancona , Italy , † 1967 in Brazil ) was an Italian weightlifter who competed four times in the Olympic Games and won a bronze medal in the lightweight at the 1932 Olympic Games .

Career

Gastone Pierini lived with his family in Egypt . He came to weightlifting there and first started in 1924 for Italy at the Olympic Games. In 1924 this took place in Paris and a pentathlon (one-armed tearing and pushing as well as two-armed tearing, pushing and pushing) was fought. Gastone Pierini came in the lightweight, the weight class up to 67.5 kg body weight, on 392.5 kg (55-72.5-80-80-105), which he took 12th place.

In 1928 the Olympic Games took place in Amsterdam. The Olympic triathlon was held there for the first time in weightlifting, which consisted of pushing, tearing and pushing with both arms and which remained in this form until the 1972 Olympic Games. Gastone Pierini scored 282.5 kg in this light-weight three-way battle and came 8th.

In 1932, Gastone Pierini, who never took part in the Italian championships, achieved an excellent 315 kg at the Egyptian championships in the lightweight. With this achievement he reached the 2nd place behind Ahmed Anwar, who achieved the same achievement in the three-way fight, but was awarded the first price due to his achievement in the push of 135.5 kg. It was tragic for the Egyptian weightlifters, who were the absolute best in the world at the time, that they could not be sent to Los Angeles for economic reasons. Gastone Pierini, on the other hand, was able to start there and won the bronze medal with his performance of 302.5 kg (92.5-90-120) behind Rene Duverger from France, 325 kg and Hans Haas , Austria, 307.5 kg.

Gastone Pierini was also at the start at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. He reached there in the lightweight in the Olympic three-way fight 300 kg (95-90-115), but given the level that has risen sharply in the meantime, this was only enough for 10th place.

In 1943, as an Italian citizen in Egypt, Gastone Pierini was interned by the Allies in a camp, from which he was only released in 1948. In 1957 he emigrated to Brazil, where he died in 1967.
