Anton Zwerina

Anton Zwerina (born June 7, 1900 - May 19, 1973 ) was an Austrian weightlifter . He won a silver medal in the lightweight pentathlon at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris .

Career

Anton Zwerina began weightlifting as a young man after the end of the First World War in Vienna. He initially started for the Ottakringer Straßenbahner Athleten-Klub Vienna and moved to the Währinger Athleten-Klub Vienna in 1923 .

In 1921 he started for the first time in the Austrian championship and took 8th place in the lightweight four-way battle with 314 kg. In 1922 he reached 4th place at the Austrian championship in the light weight four-way battle with 332 kg.

In 1923 he qualified for participation in the World Cup, which took place in his hometown of Vienna. He took 4th place in the lightweight in four-way combat with 342.5 kg behind his compatriot Rudolf Edinger , Heinrich Baumann from Germany and Bohumil Durdis from Czechoslovakia .

1924 turned out to be the most successful year in Anton Zwerina's career. At the end of May 1924 he won the Austrian Olympic elimination in Vienna in the lightweight pentathlon with 430 kg in front of Wilhelm Etzenberger. He was also in good shape at the Olympic Games this year in Paris and won the silver medal in the lightweight pentathlon with a total performance of 420 kg behind Frenchman Edmond Decottignies , who came in at 440 kg.

Then Anton Zwerina competed in various international and national competitions until the end of 1927 and was able to achieve consistently good results. World or European championships did not take place between 1925 and 1927.
