The wooden synagogue in Pechenishyn in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast in Ukraine was built towards the end of the 18th century and burned down by Russian soldiers during World War I.

history

The synagogue was built around 1793. It is known that the interior decoration and murals date from 1795. It has been rebuilt a few times; last in 1903 a larger extension was added in the south. After the building was destroyed in World War I, later attempts to reconstruct the exact appearance were varied and unsatisfactory.

architecture

The main hall was almost square with 8.60 × 8.5 m; the walls were 4.30 m high. To the west there was a vestibule that was used as a prayer room in the basement in winter and the women's rooms were on the first floor. In 1903 a side wing was added to the south for additional prayer rooms for women.

There were two rectangular windows on each side wall; on the south side they were later covered by the extension.

The entire original structure had a two-tier hipped roof with hammer-beam vaults . The gable of the rafter roof of the 1903 extension stood at right angles to the roof of the main hall. Presumably the main hall initially had a vaulted ceiling, but this was later removed so that one could see up to the roof.

The main room was decorated with multi-colored paintings.

The high Torah shrine was three-tiered and richly decorated. It was separated from the rest of the room by a small door.

The bima stood on an octagonal podium near the entrance and had a balustrade with two rows of round balusters standing on top of one another .
