Synagogue in Slavonice

The synagogue in Slavonice (German Zlabings ), a Czech city in south-west Moravia , was built in 1894/95. The secular synagogue in Langengasse is a protected cultural monument .

description

The classical synagogue is divided on the street side by four pilasters . An arched opening leads to the portal of the building. The two-story building ends with a cornice and a decorative triangular gable.

The synagogue complex consists of a front and a rear building that cannot be seen from the street. After the entrance there are rooms on the right that may have served as the teacher's apartment. The following staircase forms the connection between the front and rear buildings. To the left of the stairs ascending to the right was the entrance to the men's synagogue in the rear building, which stretched the full height of the house. Using the same staircase, the women reached the gallery on the first floor of the rear building, which was probably made of wood. Opposite was the entrance to the classroom of the Jewish school, which was located on the first floor of the front building.

Todays use

The former synagogue was converted into a residential building after 1945. A false ceiling was installed in the prayer room so that apartments could be created on both floors. In 2014 the synagogue building was put up for sale by the city of Slavonice. A family who bought the building began renovations in 2017. The interior has not been used as a synagogue for a long time. Only arched windows, partially walled up, are reminiscent of the former church.
