synagogue

The synagogue, of which the exact construction date is not known, is mentioned for the first time in 1850. Before that there was probably a prayer room in the community. In 1913 an application was made for a grant to renovate the synagogue. In 1933 the synagogue was completely abandoned because it was in disrepair.

Baumholder Jewish Community

The first settlement of Jewish residents took place in the 18th century. In addition to the synagogue, the Jewish community had a religious school and a mikveh . At times, a separate religion teacher was employed, who also performed the duties of prayer leader and shochet . The deceased were buried in the Jewish cemetery in Hoppstädten . Since in the 1920s the minyan required to conduct a service could no longer be formed regularly, services were only held irregularly. At that time, the Jewish residents were already attending the services in the synagogue in Hoppstädten . From 1933, after the seizure of power of Adolf Hitler , the Jewish inhabitants were increasingly disenfranchised. In addition, there were repeated anti-Jewish actions. As a result, many Jewish families left Baumholder. 11 residents emigrated to the United States . In mid-1939 there were no more Jewish residents living in Baumholder
