The synagogue in Ediger , a suburb of the municipality Ediger-Eller in Cochem-Zell in Rhineland-Palatinate , was built in the mid 19th century. The secular synagogue on Rathausstrasse, between No. 3 and 5, is a protected cultural monument .

history

The small plastered building with pointed arch openings was built in the neo-Gothic style using a house built around 1500. Around 1880, a women's gallery was added and a new entrance was created on the street side. The colorful glazed western window, the window grilles decorated with the heads of nobility and the entrance door are all from this period. During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue windows were smashed and the prayer room was devastated. The building was then aryanized and used as a farm building. After it was sold to two new owners in the 1950s, the building was divided. The half facing the Moselle was converted into an apartment in the late 1980s.

In 1999, the Ediger Synagogue Citizens Association was established , which acquired the former synagogue in 2002/03 and extensively renovated it by 2008. The ornamental ceiling was restored after paint residues and the colorful glazed windows were renewed. A Genisa with fragments of Jewish prayer books, illustrated writings and Torah pulses was found in the Ediger synagogue .

Cultural events take place in the former synagogue, which is now called the House of Psalms .
