The synagogue in Gedern , a town in the Wetterau district in Hesse , was built in 1866. The secular synagogue is located at Lauterbacher Straße 78, the former main street.

history

A prayer room or a first synagogue already existed in Gedern before the new building in 1866. In 1903, the building was converted or renovated.

In 1937 the building was sold to the city of Gedern and therefore escaped destruction during the November pogrom in 1938 . After 1945 the building was converted into a residential building with a café on the ground floor.

description

The two-story solid building had a gable facing the street. Two pilaster strips rose from the plinth and ended in the triangular pediment. The facade was structured by arched windows. The street gable was bare and carried the tablets of the law on top . In the synagogue building there was also a classroom, the teacher's apartment and the ritual immersion bath ( mikveh ) in the vaulted cellar .
