Memorial for the Jewish community Neuwied

The synagogue in Neuwied , a town in northern Rhineland-Palatinate , was inaugurated in 1748. It was located at the beginning of Engerser Strasse, which was renamed Synagogengasse in 1983.

history

In 1699, 46 years after the city was founded by Count Friedrich III. von Wied , the names of 10 Jews were listed in the population register of Neuwied, in 1734 there were 19 names.

The Jewish community Neuwied initially had a prayer room in the lower Schlossstrasse. As the community grew, plans were made to build a synagogue from 1739. Count Friedrich Alexander provided a plot of land in the immediate vicinity of the palace and provided 10 logs, 200 carts of stones and 100 carts of sand for construction.

The construction of the synagogue dragged on for several years and in the spring of 1748 the construction was completed. The synagogue was ceremoniously inaugurated on August 13, 1748, with Rabbi Lazarus Salomon from Hungary giving the ceremonial address.

The interior of the synagogue was redesigned shortly before the First World War by the Neuwied painter, draftsman and graphic artist Gustav Bernhard Rüschhoff (1886–1947).

time of the nationalsocialism

During the November pogrom of 1938 , the synagogue was looted on the morning of November 10, 1938, the furnishings were smashed and the marble plaque with the names of the parishioners who died in World War I was removed. The building was demolished a little later.

architecture

The single- story hipped roof building stood set back from the street. The facade had three wide, high arched windows with profiled walls . To the left of it was the portal crowned with a gable . A Torah curtain donated in 1871 has been in the Koblenz synagogue since 2001 .

Commemoration

In 1960 , a memorial plaque was put up in memory of the Jewish school and the synagogue at the former Jewish primary school , with the synagogue on the right . After the house was demolished in 1980, the memorial plaque was attached to the newly built office building in 1983. In 1983 Engerser Strasse between Schlossstrasse and Theaterplatz was renamed Synagogengasse.
