Synagogue in Oerlinghausen

The synagogue that still exists today in Oerlinghausen , a town in the Lippe district of northeast North Rhine-Westphalia , was built in 1894 and is located at Tönsbergstraße 4. The synagogue is listed with the number 33 as an architectural monument in the city's list of monuments.

history

Jewish life in Oerlinghausen has been documented since the middle of the 17th century. As early as 1802/03, a synagogue - presumably largely made of wood - was built on the slope of the Tönsberg not far from the Jewish cemetery. A synagogue ordinance published in 1803 by the Oerlinghauser community testifies to this. Before that, the service took place in the prayer room of a private apartment. The building was dilapidated after just three decades and was replaced by a stone structure. Due to the location on the mountain, cracks appeared in the walls at the beginning of the 1890s, which led to a new building, which was completed in 1894.

The synagogue is a simple quarry stone building structured by strong pilaster strips . The oculi and the arched windows are remarkable . The synagogue was sold by the Jewish community of Oerlinghausen in July 1938 before the November pogroms in 1938 and escaped destruction by the Nazis. However, after the pogrom, the wooden tower with dome and Star of David was removed. The synagogue community of Oerlinghausen was admitted to the Detmold synagogue community in September 1938 by resolution of the community assembly of August 21, 1938. The documents from the former synagogue community of Oerlinghausen were only sent to the Lippe regional association of synagogue communities between September and November 9, 1938, so that some Oerlinghausen documents have been preserved, for example the cash register from 1866 to 1938. It is one of the few old synagogues in the area of Ostwestfalen-Lippe , which have largely been preserved true to the original. The former synagogue is now used by the Oerlinghauser Kunstverein as an exhibition space for contemporary painting and sculpture . In 1985 the building was extensively renovated, with the loss of the ornaments on the window frames.

Todays use

The building is used by the Kunstverein Oerlinghausen for exhibitions.
