Former synagogue in Strelitz-Alt (around 1915)

The synagogue in Strelitz-Alt , a district of Neustrelitz in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , was built in 1762/63 and destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 .

history

Location of the former synagogue on Alexanderplatz

The synagogue , as the meeting house of the Jewish community of Strelitz , was inaugurated on September 5, 1763 in the presence of Adolf Friedrich IV. - the ruling Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz since 1752. Their location was in a set-back position on a property at today's Alexanderplatz. The services were held with choir singing and organ playing in accordance with the rite of Reform Judaism that arose in the 19th century . The synagogue was renovated for the first time in 1847. From 1860 to 1911 the chief rabbi Jacob Hamburger worked here .

Adolf Friedrich IV made the building site available. The Jewish community of Strelitz - at that time 60 families with around 420 - 480 family members - raised the funds itself. The duke contributed numerous ritual objects.

During the November pogroms on November 10, 1938, the synagogue was destroyed by arson by the National Socialists . The reconstruction of the synagogue was prohibited by the city administration on November 12, 1938. With reference to the 1938 decree on the Jewish property tax signed by Hermann Göring , the Neustrelitz city administration - which had only nine members since April 24, 1938 - to immediately repair the damage caused during the Reichspogromnacht. Since this was not able to do this, the city administration ordered the demolition of the destroyed synagogue. The costs of 6,907.10 Reichsmarks plus interest and fees were billed to the Jewish community after the trial was lost. The Reich Association of Jews in Germany finally had to take on the demand .

At the original location, a wrought iron fence from 1913 still reminds of the synagogue.

Architecture and furnishings

The synagogue was a rococo- style, massive plastered building over a rectangular shape with four slender, six-winged round arched windows on the long sides. The interior could be entered from the front via a vestibule. A large hall - the assembly room of the community - with a mirror vault was connected to the anteroom with two spiral staircases. In the altar niche stood a nine-armed candlestick - a Hanukkiah made of bronze with a diameter of 1.00 m and a height of 1.85 m. In the Torah ark two were Torah scrolls with silver Rimonim and silver Toraschilden kept. These ritual objects were probably made by the court jeweler Carl Ludwig Leonard Barnewitz from Neustrelitz. In addition, a 68 cm high water container and a 40 cm high copper sink for ritual ablutions as well as a high silver incense lamp were kept in the synagogue .
