The former synagogue today

The secular synagogue in Strzelce Opolskie ( Groß Strehlitz ) dates from the 19th century and is located on Plac Żeromskiego.

history

The synagogue on what was then New Ring (later Hindenburgplatz, today Plac Żeromskiego) was built around 1850. In 1901 the synagogue was expanded structurally.

During the November pogroms on the night of November 9th to 10th, 1938, only the interior was burned in public on the street, while the synagogue itself was neither destroyed nor set on fire.

After the Second World War, the synagogue building was converted into an agricultural warehouse by the new Polish communist administration. Shops were later added to the side of the square. In the 1970s, the building was converted into a sports hall and the external appearance of the building was completely changed.
