Hafenstrasse synagogue (Opole)
The Hafenstrasse synagogue in Opole from 1897 was located on the Pascheke on Hafenstrasse. It was built in the Moorish style according to plans by the Wroclaw architect Felix Henry . It replaced the synagogue on Hospitalstrasse in Opole.
history
First, in 1893, Henry was supposed to design an extension to the old synagogue in Hospitalstrasse in Opole's old town. However, in the same year the Jewish community decided to build a new building. In 1893 a piece of land was acquired in Wilhelmsthal on the Pascheke, which in 1899 became a district of Opole.
In the spring of 1894, construction began on the new synagogue. The master mason E. Schmidt from Opole was responsible for the execution. Due to the loose and wet subsoil, the synagogue was not completed until 1897, with structural difficulties.
On Monday, June 21, 1897, the farewell ceremony took place in the synagogue on Hospitalstrasse, after which the Torah scrolls were brought to the new synagogue on Hafenstrasse. The next day the synagogue was inaugurated, to which Heydebrand's senior government representative was sent as the state representative .
From 1917 to 1928 David Braunschweiger worked as a rabbi in Opole.
During the pogrom night on November 9, 1938, the synagogue was set on fire and the ruins were torn down until 1939.
In the 1960s, a school building was built on the site of the synagogue. In 1998 a memorial plaque was put up.
