The former synagogue of Opole (today Opole ) from 1840 was located on what was then Hospitalstrasse directly on the Mühlgraben . It was replaced in 1897 by a new building in the Opole suburb of Wilhelmsthal and has since been used as a secular building. As a result, the building survived the National Socialist era without damage.

history

The synagogue was built in 1840. Before that, the number of Jewish people in Opole increased. More and more factories and shops were founded by Jews in the city, such as Marcus Friedländer's brewery or the cement factories in the surrounding area. Before 1840, the prayer rooms were housed by Jewish entrepreneurs, for example at the beer brewer on the Ring or at the shoemaker's in Krakauerstrasse. After these became much too small, however, the decision was made to build the synagogue on Hospitalstrasse (today: ul. Szpitalna), directly on Mühlgraben. A municipal bathing establishment once stood here.

The building was built in the classicism style. It has a square floor plan measuring 14.7 m × 20 m.

New building on Hafenstrasse

After the building became too small for the growing community, a new synagogue was built on Hafenstrasse on the Pascheke . The last service took place on June 21, 1897.

Reuse

After the Jewish community had moved into their new church on Hafenstrasse, the former church was auctioned off. The building was bought by a lady named Emilia Schweizer, who quickly sold it to Erdmann Raabe, a publisher. This is where he housed his Opole printing press. It was only through this change that the building survived the so-called Reichskristallnacht in 1938. From 1945 the building was used as a library and later for the Polish television station TVP Opole . In 2006 the building was renovated by the TV broadcaster.
