The synagogue in Altenstadt (Iller) , a market town in the Swabian district of Neu-Ulm in Bavaria , was built in 1802/03. It served the Jewish community of Altenstadt .

history

The first synagogue in Altenstadt was built in 1719. The new synagogue was built in 1802/03 on today's plot of land at Memminger Strasse 47 according to plans by the master builder Johann Nepomuk Salzgeber from Buch . The rectangular synagogue building was modeled on the Ichenhausen synagogue built in 1781 .

During the November pogrom in 1938 , the synagogue was demolished, the interior furnishings and cult objects were burned.

The synagogue building was then used in different ways. In 1955 it was canceled. A commercial and residential building was built on the property.

Commemoration

Memorial plaque at the former location of the Altenstadt synagogue

Since 1984 a memorial plaque has been commemorating the synagogue with the following inscription: “This is where the synagogue of the Israelite religious community of Altenstadt was built in 1802. It was damaged in the persecution of our fellow Jewish citizens in November 1938 and broken up in 1955. Withered grass. Flower wilted. But the word of our God endures forever ”.
