The synagogue in Madison , the capital of the US state of Wisconsin , was built in 1863 and is the eighth oldest synagogue in the United States . The neo-Romanesque- style synagogue was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

history

The arched synagogue was built by the Bremen architect August Kutzbock (approx. 1814–1868).

After the synagogue, which has since been secularized, served other purposes, it was to be demolished in 1971. Committed citizens prevented this and achieved that the building was moved to James Madison Park.

Since 2011 the synagogue has been used regularly for Jewish services again .
