Synagogue Marburg (1897–1938)
The synagogue at Universitätsstraße 11 in Marburg , the district town of the Marburg-Biedenkopf district in Central Hesse , was inaugurated on September 15, 1897 and destroyed in 1938.
history
In the 1880s, the synagogue inaugurated in 1818 at Ritterstraße 2 was no longer sufficient for the larger Jewish community of Marburg . The architect Wilhelm Spahr was commissioned to plan a new building . The neo-Romanesque synagogue had space for 230 men and 175 women.
The construction work took place in 1896/97 and on September 15, 1897 the inauguration took place by the provincial rabbi Leo Munk.
time of the nationalsocialism
During the November pogrom in 1938 the synagogue was desecrated and burned down by SA men in Marburg . The costs for demolishing the fire ruin were billed to the Jewish community. The Philipps University acquired the property on 28 July 1939th
Commemoration
On November 10, 1963, a memorial stone was inaugurated on the synagogue property to commemorate the destruction of the synagogue. A green space with seating and a parking lot for the university were set up on the synagogue property.
