Synagogue (Bork)
The synagogue in Bork , a district of Selm in the Unna district in North Rhine-Westphalia , is one of the few remaining regional synagogues in Westphalia .
history
The exact year of construction of the synagogue is unknown; the first written mention can be found in a list of houses from 1818.
In 1847 there were 68 Jews living in Selm and Bork. In 1939, according to the May 17 census, there were only two left. The last Selm Jews were deported in 1942 .
The synagogue was used for prayer until the Reichspogromnacht in 1938. During the pogrom , the building was looted and the interior was partially destroyed. The Jewish community was forced to sell the building. A coal merchant bought the building and used it as a warehouse.
In 1983 the synagogue was added to the list of monuments .
In 1991, the renovation of the synagogue began and in 1994 it was returned to the public. It has been used by Etz Ami , a liberal community, since 2000 .
