The synagogue Wachenbuchen was up to the November pogrom of 1938, the synagogue of the Jewish community of Wachenbuchen , now part of Maintal in Hesse . The building has been preserved and is used as a residential building.

history

After the local community had only one prayer room before, the synagogue was built in 1870 (according to other sources, 1880). The community existed since the 18th century and had 13 people in 1754, 38 in 1835, 90 in 1861, and 97 in 1871. In the neighborhood (house Hauptstrasse / Alt Wachenbuchen 36) there was an eight-class elementary school, a mikveh and the teacher's apartment. In 1910 the community planned to expand the synagogue and create a new women's gallery.

The building was desecrated by SA people and other National Socialists on November 8, 1938, one day before the November pogroms in 1938, and the interior was destroyed. The neighboring school building was also stormed, whereby the teacher Leo Sonnenberg was badly mistreated and driven out of the place. The school building was demolished on this and the following days to make room for a passage between Hainstrasse and the main street ( Alt Wachenbuchen ).

The synagogue was confiscated by the Wachenbuchen community. From 1943, forced laborers were housed here. In 1949/50 the community bought the building from the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization (JRSO) at a price of 6,566 marks. The synagogue was initially used by a car repair shop, and in the meantime as a training facility for local sports clubs. In 1950 the Protestant parish had the building converted into a church space as a replacement for the not yet restored Wachenbuchen church, which was destroyed in a bomb attack in January 1945. The municipality furnished an emergency apartment on the upper floor.

It was used as a Christian church until 1953, when the building became privately owned. For a long time it was a locksmith's workshop, later a car workshop again, today the whole building is used as a residential building.

building

The building is located on the corner of Alt Wachenbuchen / Hainstraße (address Alt Wachenbuchen 34). The Wachenbuchen synagogue is a simple hall structure. The building has quarry stone masonry made of dark basalt and a saddle roof with small crooked hips , the gable faces the Alt Wachenbuchen street (formerly the main street). To distinguish it from residential buildings, it has large arched windows with soffits made of red sandstone . The prayer room had space for 50 men and 28 women.

A memorial plaque is on the gable side of the building facing Alt Wachenbuchen . It was inaugurated in 1984 and renewed in 1999.
