The Synagogue of Trieste ( Tempio Israelitico di Trieste ) is the synagogue in the northern Italian city of Trieste , it is located on Via Gaetano Donizetti and Via San Francesco Assisi in Piazza Giotti. The synagogue is one of the largest and most important Jewish places of worship in Europe .

According to Jewish tradition, the house of God was built on a west-east axis. The architectural style is based on models from Syria . The decorations in the interior and on the facade are characteristic, especially the window rosettes developed from a Star of David .

history

The Synagogue of Trieste was built between 1908 and 1912 by the two Trieste architects Ruggero and Arduino Berlam and increasingly replaced the city's smaller synagogues, which were eventually demolished in the 1920s and 1930s.

In 1942 the synagogue was closed by the fascist regime. After the end of the Second World War , the church was reopened.
