Chiasmocleis is a genus of frogs from the Gastrophryninae subfamily of the narrow-mouthed frog family. In 2014 the genus was merged with the related genus Syncope .

description

The pupils are round. The tongue is elliptical, with entire margins and the rear half can be lifted off freely. Palatine teeth are missing. A short, membranous transverse ridge runs between the tiny eustachian tubes. The eardrum is invisible. The fingers and toes are pointed and have simple bony terminal phalanges. Webbed feet are missing. The precoracoid are cartilaginous, weakly ossified at the front edge and run forward in a convex arc. The omosternum is missing. The sternum is an anchor-shaped cartilage plate. The transverse processes of the sacral vertebra are greatly widened.

Occurrence

The genus occurs between Panama and tropical South America north and east of the Andes .

Systematics

The genus Chiasmocleis was first described by Lajos Méhelÿ in 1904 . In 2012 some species of the genus Chiasmocleis were transferred to the genus Syncope and Elachistocleis panamensis was transferred from Chiasmocleis to the genus Elachistocleis . In 2014, however , Chiasmocleis and Syncope were merged.

Before the merger, Syncope comprised eight species:

  • Syncope antenori Walker , 1973
  • Syncope bassleri ( Dunn , 1949)
  • Syncope carvalhoi Nelson , 1975
  • Syncope hudsoni ( Parker , 1940)
  • Syncope jimi ( Caramaschi & Cruz , 2001)
  • Syncope magnova ( Moravec & Köhler , 2007)
  • Syncope supercilialbus ( Morales & McDiarmid , 2009)
  • Syncope tridactyla ( Duellman & Mendelson , 1995)

According to the priority rule , the older name Chiasmocleis was applied to the entire genus.

This genus currently includes 34 species (as of April 24, 2018):
