Synergy (English for synergy ) is a KVM - open source - program , which enables the use of a mouse and a keyboard on several PCs over a computer network.

function

The program enables a single keyboard and mouse to be used on multiple computers. It directs the input from the mouse and keyboard from the host -PC to the appropriate client again once with the mouse pointer of the respective one edge desktops is exceeded. Any number of PCs can be linked in this way and the connections at the edges of the desktops can be arranged in the same way as the various devices are set up. For the user, this gives the impression that the desktops of all connected PCs are connected to one workspace. A special feature of Synergy is that for Windows (from Win 95 / NT ) and all Unix - Operating Systems ( macOS , Linux , Solaris , etc.) are available and these can network with each other. In addition, Synergy can synchronize the contents of the PC's clipboard , although this is only possible for pure text and bitmaps . Using drag & drop, it is also possible to copy files directly between the connected computers. So far, this is only supported on Windows and Mac OS X.

The mouse and keyboard inputs are forwarded via TCP / IP (port 24800).

history

Since the program was no longer developed from 2006 to 2010, a group of developers formed a fork called Synergy +, in which numerous bugs were fixed and in which new features have already been incorporated (e.g. real dual monitor support on the guest Machine, as well as the option to temporarily limit the mouse to one monitor). Support for outdated Windows systems (Win-9x line) has been given up.

In 2010, Synergy + was merged again with the original Synergy project. In addition, the developers want to integrate additional projects, which z. B. has already happened with QSynergy, a Qt GUI for Synergy.

Since 2014, new releases have only been offered for download on the manufacturer's website against payment. Daily test versions are available to all users, but only activate communication encryption with the appropriate access data after online activation. The entire source code is available in a public repository so that it is still possible to compile a fully functional version. This step was justified with insufficient income from donors.

Alternatives

ShareMouse is an alternative that is limited to macOS and Windows. Similar programs are Multiplicity and Input Director for Windows and Teleport for Mac OS X.

Mouse Without Borders offers similar functionality, but only limited to Microsoft Windows.
