largest lake in the Ukrainian Carpathians |
The Synewyr (Ukrainian Синевир , Russian Sinevir , Polish Synewyr ) is a lake in Ukrainian National Park Synewyr in the Waldkarpaten .
The lake is one of the Ramsar areas of Ukraine and with a surface area of 4.5 to 7.5 hectares, it is the largest lake in the Ukrainian Carpathians.
The lake is at 989 m height near the villages Swoboda ( Свобода ) and Synewyrska Poljana ( Синевирська Поляна ) in Rayon Mizhhirya the oblast Transcarpathians .
The water level of the lake, which is fed by rainwater and meltwater as well as three mountain streams, fluctuates constantly: it is very high during the rainy season and when the snowmelts, while it falls sharply in winter. The amplitude of the fluctuations in the water level reaches 4 to 4.5 m, as a result of which the surface of the lake changes accordingly. Its mean depth is 8.1 m, its maximum depth is 18 to 23.5 m. The water of the lake is clear and clean and, due to its specific location, its depth and the proximity to the mountains, has a constant temperature of + 11 ° C. Its banks are lined with forest, and aquatic plants can only be found along the coastal strip. A small stream flows from the lake to Tereblja .
The lake, which has the shape of an irregular square, has in its center an island of a few square meters, which however disappears in the lake when the water level is high. Since this island acts like the pupil of an eye, the lake is also called the Blue Eye . Currently there is a 13 m high, carved mahogany sculpture on the island.
