Syngrapha devergens is a butterfly ( moth ) from the owl butterfly family(Noctuidae).

The wingspan of the moth is 29 to 31 millimeters. On the front wings gray-brown stains prevail. In the dark central field, they show a characteristic silver-white symbol, for example in the form of the letter gamma from the Greek alphabet. This gamma symbol is broad and slightly diverging at the front end. Ring and kidney flaws have a faint whitish border, but hardly stand out from the ground. The wavy line is very jagged. The hind wings are yellow and provided with a narrow black band. The thorax is furry and has a few tufts of hair, the proboscis is well developed.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are red-brown in color. They show light segment incisions, yellow back and side back lines and also yellow side stripes.

Doll

The black-brown doll is provided with a short proboscis sheath and a long, stem-shaped cremaster .

Similar species

  • Hochenwarth's gold owl ( Syngrapha hochenwarthi ) is distinguished by a predominantly brownish base color on the forewings and somewhat wider ends in the upper part of the gamma symbol
  • The bog gold owl ( Syngrapha microgamma ) is distinguished by a wider black band on the hind wings. In both of the aforementioned types , the wavy line is less jagged.
  • Syngrapha rilaecacuminum is paler in overall appearance and has a longer stretched gamma sign. The species only colonizes a few mountain areas in Bulgaria .

distribution and habitat

Syngrapha devergens occurs in the high altitudes of the Alps , in the Tian Shan and in the Altai Mountains . The main habitat of the species are dry mountain slopes.

Way of life

The moths of Syngrapha devergens form one generation per year whose main flight time is in July and August. They mostly fly during the day in the sunshine and like to suckle on the flowers of ciliate herbs ( Silene ). They rarely visit artificial light sources at night . The caterpillars prefer to feed on the leaves of various catchwort ( Silene ), plantain ( Plantago ), violet ( Viola ) and carnation root ( Geum ) species . You hibernate twice.
