Synod of Carthage (418)
The synod or council of Carthage , which is counted as the fifteenth or sixteenth church assembly held in Carthage , depending on the number , took place on May 1, 418 in the Basilica of Faustus in the presence of Bishop Augustine of Hippo and another 214 bishops from around the world Roman province of Africa and from Numidia .
The council primarily regulated the doctrine of original sin ( canons 1 to 3) and the doctrine of the Christian grace of redemption (canons 3 to 8).
The bishops condemned the doctrine of Pelagianism , as well as the Pelagian Caelestius, and they renewed the excommunication of Pelagius . Pope Zosimus , who had previously rehabilitated Pelagius, approved the eight council canons.
