The Syntagma kata stoicheion ( Greek Σύνταγμα κατὰ στοιχεῖον , alphabetical compilation ' ) is a late Byzantine legal book .

The Syntagma kata stoicheion is a manual of Byzantine ecclesiastical and secular law divided into the 24 letters ( στοιχεῖα ) of the Greek alphabet, which was completed in 1334/5 by the Thessaloniki- based Hieromonachos Matthaios Blastares . The focus of the work is on canon law, which is represented quite completely by paraphrases of canons of the synods and church fathers (including their commentaries by Theodoros Balsamon ); under the heading "(secular) laws" (νόμοι [πολιτικοί]), however, sources of secular law are often given. A particularly long chapter (M 15) is devoted to the monasteries and monks. The work was - probably by the author himself - provided with several appendices, in particular canons of the Patriarch Nicephorus I , an excerpt from the "Canon", Erotapokriseis (questions and answers) of Nicetas of Herakleia and des, wrongly ascribed to Patriarch Ioannes IV Nesteutes Ioannes von Kitros , versified lists of the court offices of the Imperial Palace and the Great Church of Constantinople, as well as a dictionary of Latin legal terms. The Syntagma kata stoicheion is the traditional most frequently (in more than 200 manuscripts) compilation of Byzantine law , which also multiply into other languages, including the time of Stefan Uroš IV. Dušan into into Serbian and about 1,498 of Kunalis Kritopulos Modern Greek has been translated .
