Systellonotus triguttatus is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).
features
The bugs are 3.3 to 4.7 millimeters long. They have a characteristic, ant-like appearance. Their compound eyes are remote from the pronotum , which allows them to be distinguished from the similar species of the genus Hallodapus . The males have fully developed (macroptere) wings and two conspicuous pale bandages on the brown hemielytres . The females have shortened (microptere) wings and are very similar to ants.
Occurrence and habitat
The species is distributed in Europe without the south and east to Western Siberia and the Caucasus region. In Germany and Austria the species occurs everywhere and is common in places. It is rare only in the northwest. Various dry, open habitats are settled, from xerothermal sand and limestone soils to Calluna heaths, poor grasslands or ruderal areas to dry areas in moors.
Way of life
Systellonotus triguttatus feeds on zoophytophagus. They are often found near garden ants , into whose nests the females invade and suckle at the developmental stages. The bugs also suckle on aphids and honeydew. Plant sap is sucked non-specifically by different plants. The males like to climb high on the plants. There are two generations per year. The nymphs of the first can be seen mainly in May, the second from July to August. The adults appear in June and July or August and September. In favorable years there is also a second generation in the north German lowlands, in unfavorable years there is only one generation in the south.
