Szymon Konarski
Szymon Konarski also Janusz Hejbowicz and Janusz Niemrawa (born March 5, 1808 in Dobkiszki near Sejny ; † February 27, 1839 in Vilnius ) was a Polish politician, freedom fighter , participant in the November uprising and representative of the Polish democracy movement.
Origin and family
Konarski was born the son of Jerzy Stefan Konarski and Paulina in Wiszniewska, in the village of Dobkiszki near Sejny . His father was a colonel in the Polish Army and had participated in both the Russo-Polish War and the Kościuszko uprising . At the age of 9 Konarski attended a Calvinist school in Sejny and then a commercial school in Łomża .
Political career
Konarski became a member of Young Poland , a Polish faction of the Young Europe movement . He was influenced by the Russian Decembrist Pestel and criticized the Polish aristocracy and the head of the Polish revolutionary government Czartoryski . Together with Jan Czyński (1801–1867), Leon Zaleski (1810–1841) and Adam Sperczyński, he was editor of the democratic newspaper “Północ” from 1835. He was arrested by the French police and taken to England. Konarski went back to Brussels, where he met Lelewel . He later moved to Krakow under the name Burhardt Sievers and went to Olyka as Janusz Hejbowicz . The secret agents of Louis-Philippe I passed on the information of Konarski's real identity to the Russians, whereupon Konarski was arrested on May 27, 1838 near Vilna and executed on February 27, 1839.
