Timarit.is

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Timarit.is , also available at the Greenland address aviisitoqqat.gl , is an open access platform for digitized magazines and newspapers operated by the National and University Library of Iceland in cooperation with the Greenland National Library and the National Library of the Faroe Islands . Tímarit is the Icelandic word for "magazine".

History and existence

The platform goes back to a project originally known as VESTNORD , which was developed from 1999 and went into operation in 2002. In 2007 and 2011 the website was fundamentally revised. In the first phase of the project, the National and University Libraries had digitized almost all Icelandic newspapers and magazines published before 1920. Currently all newspapers and selected magazines should be made available up to the present, depending on agreements with the rights holders. For some titles, there is a blocking period ( moving wall ) of 2 to 4 years.

As of the beginning of November 2018, Timarit.is had 1,176 newspaper and magazine titles, 63,780 articles and 5,604,820 pages online. Titles in Icelandic were digitized (also from abroad, especially from Canada , where many people of Icelandic descent have settled), periodicals in other languages mainly from Iceland, such as the English-language newspaper The Reykjavík Grapevine, as well as Greenlandic , Faroese and some Danish publications. A German magazine is also available with the Mitteilungen der Icelandfreunde , which appeared from 1913 to 1936.

In a study on the status of Open Access in Iceland in 2013, it was criticized that the download of entire, multi-page articles on Timarit.is, probably due to an original focus on access to digitized newspapers, is difficult, since each page is only viewed individually can be downloaded.
