Tönnies Maydell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tönnies Maydell (* in the 16th century ; † September 25, 1600 ) was a German-Baltic nobleman, Swedish admiral , Estonian knight captain and district administrator.

Origin and family

Tönnies Maydell came from the Baltic, ancient aristocratic Maydell family, who first lived in Estonia, and their ancestral seat had been mentioned in documents since 1241, i.e. at the time when Estonia was still under the Danish crown. The family was first mentioned by name in 1363 with Hennecinus Maydel. The family, who originally lived in the Estonian regions of Wierland and Harrien , later spread over the whole of the Baltic States and Sweden and was a member of the knighthoods of Estonia, Livonia, Courland and Sweden.

Life

Tönnies Maydell was born on a previously unknown date in the 16th century. Since his father, Antonius (Tönnies), the councilor of the Teutonic Order and judge in Harrien, died between 1556 and June 24, 1559, he must have been born before 1556; probably long before that, as his father was mentioned in a document as early as 1525. His mother, Euphemia von Nieroth, died after May 13, 1587. After the Danish period, which lasted until 1346, Estonia came to the Teutonic Order. The time of the order was finally replaced by the Swedish rule in 1561, but this did not affect the self-government of Estonia through the knighthood. According to the new Swedish supremacy, Tönnies Maydell entered the Swedish service, in which he was not only governor of Tolsburg , Reval , Hapsal and Lohde , but also rose to become royal Swedish admiral. In addition to his Swedish dignity, he also held local Estonian offices. He was an Estonian district administrator and since 1593 also knighthood captain.

Possessions and personal matters

Tönnies Maydell was the landlord on Wredenhagen, Forby and Tockumbeck. Since September 1570 was married to Catharina Snider (Schneider), the daughter of the Reval merchant and councilor Andres Snider. The marriage resulted in two sons, Georg and Hermann, who became the first parents of several lines of the family. Tönnies died on September 25, 1600 in Pernau .
