Killing of Daunte Wright
The 20-year-old African American Daunte Demetrius Wright was shot dead by police officer Kimberly Ann Potter on April 11, 2021 in Brooklyn Center , a location in the Twin Cities metropolitan area .
Course of events
On Sunday, April 11, 2021, around 2 p.m. local time ( UTC − 6 ), a police patrol stopped Wright's car because an inspection sticker had expired. During the subsequent review, the police found that Wright had been under an arrest warrant since April 2, 2021 for failing to appear at a court hearing. In June 2020, he was accused of illegally possessing a firearm and escaping from police officers. The officer’s body cam video shows that Wright first gets out of the car. When they tried to handcuff him - as is usual in such cases - he tears himself away from the officers and gets back into his car. The officer then exclaims: “Taser! Taser! Taser! ”Because they hit him with a taserwanted to stop. Instead, she grabbed her service weapon, a 9 mm Glock , with which she fired a shot. Then she called: “Holy shit…! I shot him! ” (Eng .: holy shit ...! I shot him!) Wright then drove a short distance with the car, which hit another vehicle and a concrete block.
Just prior to the incident, Wright phoned his mother asking for information about his auto insurance. After he hung up at the request of the police, the mother called him back a little later. Wright's friend, who was sitting in the car, told her via Facetime that he had been shot and showed her the unresponsive, motionless Wright. Hennepin County's Forensic Medicine found Wright killed by a single shot in the chest and classified the death as homicide .
Involved people
Daunte Wright had attended various schools, including Edison High School in Minneapolis (where George Floyd's girlfriend also taught him). He was the father of a two year old son.
Kimberley Ann Potter is a 48-year-old white police officer who joined the Brooklyn Center Police Department in 1995. She went on patrol with the police officer Anthony Luckey, whom she trained.
consequences
That same afternoon, a crowd gathered at the scene of the incident. Wright's mother blamed his death in a brief address to the police. Several hundred people demonstrated in front of the Brooklyn Center police headquarters on Monday night. The police used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. On the same night there were massive riots and looting of shops like Walmart or Foot Locker , which spread from Brooklyn Center to Minneapolis. The Brooklyn Center Mayor imposed a night curfew and asked the National Guard for help. Two people were killed in a shooting during the rioting in southern Minneapolis .
Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon initially assessed the firing of the shot as an accident. On Tuesday after the event, he announced his resignation, and Kim Potter also announced that she was leaving the police force. The Governor of Minnesota , Tim Walz, imposed a curfew on four nearby for the night of Tuesday Counties . Wright's parents called for peaceful protests.
On the Tuesday following the crime, Kim Potter was charged with unintentional homicide , an offense that can be punished by up to ten years in prison in Minnesota. When examining their uniform, the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) found that the holster of the taser was worn on the left and that of the pistol on the right, in accordance with the regulations . Against the lodging of a deposit of $ 100,000 was set free.
Reactions
The following Monday, President Biden called for peace and quiet. He said peaceful protests were understandable, but the anger, pain and injuries did not justify violence. Vice President Kamala Harris said Wright "should be alive". She and the nation, President Biden, sympathized with loved ones. At the same time, she knew that if politics did not address the problem of racial inequalities, from implicit biases to inoperable systems, people would continue to die.
Former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle said they felt the pain black mothers, fathers and children felt after this pointless tragedy. The Obamas, like other observers and activists, pointed to the pre-existing tension from the beginning of the trial of Derek Chauvin, a police officer involved in the killing of George Floyd .
The protests lasted for several days in Minnesota and other US states.
