The Türkenkopf via ferrata is a via ferrata of high difficulty ( D / E ) in the municipality of Eisenkappel-Vellach , Völkermarkt district , Carinthia , Austria .

Location and course

The demanding sport via ferrata is located in the Tabora rocks on the Trobefelsen on the Seeberg Straße (B 82), in the direction of Slovenia just before the village of Eisenkappel-Vellach. Cross the shallow Vellach over a small wooden bridge with a sign to the via ferrata and immediately afterwards you reach the parking lot of a former carpentry shop. There is a large information board and a direction indicator for entry.

The entrance is only a few minutes' walk from the car park, on the left bank of the Vellach. After a steep entry and a crossing, the path continues up a rock ramp through the steep stream wall. A short walkway leads to a small overhang and thus reaches the wooded walkway in the middle section. There the via ferrata continues over a rock pillar and a wooded intersection to the main wall with an overhanging key point.

You finally reach the end wall through a wooded walkway. This is followed by an insured, partly stony footpath past the Turkenkopf viewpoint to a final steep descent. You then return to the car park via a signposted forest path.

Data

The via ferrata was built as part of the “Karawanken-zukunft.eu” project under the project sponsorship of the Eisenkappel Tourist Association, with a financial investment of 39,000 euros. The route on Trobefelsen, laid out by Heinz Lechner and Christian Grübler over around 300 meters in altitude, includes all levels of difficulty (A – E).

The secured path between the ancient ruins of the Türkenschanze and viewpoints such as the Turkenkopf is designed in a modern style , with very steep passages alternating with crossings in easy terrain. 800 meters of steel cable were used for the ascent. Particularly difficult areas have also been somewhat defused with iron bars as step and grip aids.
