Turkenschanze

The Türkenschanze is the ruin of a fortification in the Carinthian Vellachtal , directly below Eisenkappel . It was built in the 15th century as a dam to protect Eisenkappel and the Seebergsattel to the north against Turkish invasions .

Out of the valley from Eisenkappel you can find the remains of two bastions to the left and right of the Vellach in the valley sides (which is why the plural of Turkenschanzen is also used). The valley between them was blocked by a fortification wall .

The left bastion is accessible for climbers through the Türkenkopf via ferrata .
