The Turkish linden tree from Ottendorf

The Ottendorf Turkish linden tree is the name given to a pair of linden trees in the Ottendorf district of the Lower Franconian community of Gädheim in the Haßberge district . The linden trees are a reminder of the failed siege of Vienna by the Turks in 1683.

Location

The two linden trees stand in a square in the center of the village. Ottendorf is located on the B 26 on a hill on the right bank of the Main , around 18 km from Schweinfurt and 14 km from Haßfurt .

history

According to local tradition, the two trees were planted in 1683 by Frankish soldiers who took part in the liberation of Vienna from the Turkish siege. In 1686 the linden trees were cut into spherical trees. In 1750, linden branches were tied into a ring that still encompasses the two trees today. Because of the increasing weight of the horizontal branches, two concentric rows of pillars were placed to support the ring in 1789. The gray sandstone pillars were delivered by the stonemason Ankenbrand from Falkenstein , who was paid 40 guilders by the community .

In 2006 the Türkenlinde was classified as not worthy of a natural monument according to the 7th environmental protection report of the Haßberge district office 2001-2006 and removed from the list of natural monuments .
