The T'ongil Market (kor. 통일 시장) is a market hall in the North Korean capital Pyongyang in the district of Rakrang-guyŏk . To the north is the Taedong-gang and to the south one reaches the T'ongil-Straße ( Road of Reunification , from 통일: T'ongil , that means "reunification"). It is also known as the Reunification Market .
history
After Kim Jong-il allowed halfway free trade on marketplaces in March 2003 due to the stagnating economy in North Korea , the T'ongil market was the first of its kind to open on September 1, 2003. With an area of over 6,000 m² and 1,500 stands, it is one of the largest in the country. They are simple halls with characteristic semicircular blue roofs.
Since the first quarter of 2011, the headquarters of Hana Electronics have been in the immediate vicinity . In 2016 a large shopping center was opened in the immediate vicinity.
Product range
The market is divided into three zones :
There are offices, money changers and food stalls in each zone . The market is also open to foreigners, there are a lot of Chinese traders to be found. Every dealer has to pay a kind of stand fee, the prices are negotiated between customer and seller.
