The T-28 ( Russian T-28 ) is a Soviet and later Uzbek tractor , which was first produced in the Wladimirski Traktorny Zavod (short ВТЗ or WTS) from 1958 . In addition, special versions were built for cotton cultivation in Uzbekistan - until 1970/72 in an assembly plant for agricultural engineering in Tashkent , then until 1995 in the Tashkentski Traktorny Sawod (ТТЗ or TTS for short). In total, at least three quarters of a million copies of the vehicle were made, which changed significantly during the production period, especially on the outside.

Vehicle history

With the DT-24 , the Wladimirski Traktorny Sawod had developed its first tractor in 1955. As a successor to the vehicle, the T-28 was built from 1958. It differed in particular through the more powerful D28 diesel engine with an output of 28 hp (20 kW). The vehicle, also known as "Wladimirez" (Russian "Владимирец"), was produced at WTS until 1964, during which time around 82,500 copies were made.

The predecessor DT-24 had already been given a three-wheeled version for cotton growing from 1956. This was manufactured in an assembly plant in Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent , the Uzbekski Traktoro-sborotschny Sawod (Russian Узбекский тракторо-сборочный завод, translated Uzbekistan tractor assembly plant ). There was also a version of the T-28 under the designation T-28Ch from 1960, which according to various statements was built in the same plant until 1970 or 1972.

In the Wladimirski Traktorny Sawod, from 1964, the focus was initially on the construction of tractor engines. It was not until 1972 that the production of the T-25 from the Charkowski Traktorny Sawod was taken over , with which there was a successor to the T-28. The Tashkent assembly plant handed over the production of the T-28 in 1970/72 to the Tashkentski Traktorny Sawod (TTS), which was also based in Tashkent. However, various parts for the tractor continued to be manufactured and delivered to TTS. The company still exists today as Tashkentski Agregatny Sawod and manufactures agricultural equipment.

The vehicle was produced in Tashkentski Traktorny Sawod until 1995. However, versions were mainly created for cotton cultivation , which is an important industry in Uzbekistan. Other gearboxes were used, which resulted in a lower top speed of only 14 km / h in some cases, but there are more gear stages. The maximum track width of the rear axle was extended to 2400 mm, and the tractors were given a closed cab and an angular body. This changed several times in the course of the production time. The front axle is single-wheel so as not to kink the tall cotton plants when passing through. Between 1960 and 1995, a total of 681,100 copies of the cotton version were built, making a total of around 760,000 T-28 tractors. Nothing is known about a successor model at TTS.

Model variants

During the long production period of a total of 37 years, there were various variants and designs of the tractor, which differed in various technical features. The following list does not claim to be complete.

  • T-28 - basic version from Vladimir with normal front axle and rear axle drive.
  • T-28A - version from Vladimir with all-wheel drive. The weight of the tractor increased by around 100 kg due to the additional components.
  • T-28B - built by WTS, probably similar to the T-28, special function unknown.
  • T-28P - four-wheeled version from Uzbekistan for maintenance work.
  • T-28Ch - Made in Uzbekistan for cotton growing with only one front wheel. Developed later.
  • T-28M , T-28M2 and T-28P2 - versions with an axle load booster . (A mechanical device, which is hung between the trailer drawbar and the tractor and which then generates pressure, can increase the load on the rear wheels and thus improve traction.)
  • T-28M2 , T-28Ch2 and T-28P2 - Instead of the diesel engine D28, the air-cooled four-cylinder diesel engine D37 from the T-40 wheel tractor , which has an output of 50 hp (37 kW), was installed.
  • T-28Ch3 and T-28Ch4 - Modernized versions for cotton growing, all three-wheeled and built in Tashkent. The latter was also equipped with a 50 hp engine and was built in the Tashkent tractor assembly plant as early as 1968.
