Antonín Matula (born April 9, 1885 in Drholec , Austria-Hungary ; died January 23, 1953 in Prague ) was a Czechoslovakian writer and cultural officer.

Life

Antonín Matula was a teacher at various middle schools from 1910 and switched to the Ministry of Education when Czechoslovakia was founded in 1919. In 1922 he founded the "Association for the Raising of the Rural People" (Sdružení k povzneseni venkova). He married Milada Dvořáková, the daughter of the orientalist Rudolf Dvořák .

In 1932 he defined in the essay Ruralismus v krásném písemnictví the Ruralimus in Czech literature ( Josef Knap ). In 1933 he gave in the literary theoretical treatise Hlasy země v evropských literaturách an overview of European ruralism, especially Flemish literature ( Herman de Man , Stijn Streuvels , Reijmont Stijns ).

In May 1938 Matula was one of the signatories of the "Manifesto of Czech cultural workers in defense of the country". After the German occupation of the Czech Republic , he was appointed section head for cultural life by the collaboration government in the Reich Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia , and in March 1939 he became a representative of the government's supervisory board in the Czech Broadcasting Company. In 1941 he prohibited the production of Friedrich Schiller's drama Don Karlos , as this could be understood by the Czech audience as an allusion to Reinhard Heydrich's posting to Prague. From 1942, Matula was also responsible for the theater, theater censorship, music performances and music publishers, including records, within the art section.
