Josef Knap (born July 28, 1900 in Podůlší near Jičín , † December 13, 1973 in Prague ) was a Czech writer, poet, literary critic and, together with Jan Čep and František Křelina, leading representatives of ruralism, also known as blood and soil literature .

After attending grammar school in 1919 and studying modern literature at the philosophical faculty of Charles University in Prague, which he graduated in 1924, he mainly traveled to a number of European countries, including Germany , Sweden , Norway , Italy and France . From 1925 to 1951 he worked in the theater department of the National Museum , of which he was later also director.

His piety, which also found a strong influence in his literature, he became a victim of the show trials against Catholic intellectuals in the 1950s . In 1952 he was sentenced to eleven years in prison. In 1955 he was released and in 1967 judicial rehabilitation . After his release, he first worked as a construction worker, later he got a job at Památník národního písemnictví . He dies in Prague and is buried in Železnice near Jičín.

His work combines realistic and impressionistic elements. He was inspired by literary works by authors from the north and the Czech Republic, including Antal Stašek , Karel Václav Rais and the impressionist Fráňa Šrámek . It mostly describes the life of the rural population.

In the 1960s he dealt with the history of theater associations and in 1961 published his book Wandering Artists (Umělcové na pouti) about it . In 1967 his memoirs appear without the last chapter (Bez poslední kapitoly). Other works included monographs and literary-critical studies.
