Rudolf Dvořák (* 1860 in Dříteň ; † February 1, 1920 in Prague ) was a Czech orientalist .

Life

He came from a family of teachers and after attending grammar school in Budweis he went to Prague University in 1879 , where he devoted himself to classical and oriental philology . After completing his studies in 1884, he received a scholarship for Leipzig . Here he visited all orientalists who were famous at the time and showed great interest in all areas, be it Assyriology , Arabic studies and other Semitic languages as well as Egyptology , Iranian studies and Sinology .

A year later he deepened his knowledge in Munich , among other things by studying the Egyptian languages . He returned to Charles University, completed his habilitation and was appointed professor in 1890. At this time he also worked as chief editor of the territory Oriental at Otto's Education encyclopedia (Ottov slovník naučný).

From 1900 to 1901 he was elected dean of the philosophical faculty and from 1915 to 1916 rector of the university. He was a member of the Czech Academy ( Česká akademie ) and the Czech Education Society ( Česká společnost nauk ).

Dvořák is one of the founders of Czech oriental studies. His life's work as a journalist reflects his wide range of interests.

Works

From 1885 he published articles on linguistics and cultural history in Czech and foreign magazines . He did pioneering work primarily in the field of sinology. In collaboration with Jaroslav Vrchlický they translated one of the classic books Book of Songs . Dvořák made the work of Confucius known in the Czech Republic through his book The Chinese Confucius Life and Teaching . Later he was the first to translate the famous work of the legendary philosopher Laotse .
