Ty Jacob "TJ" Leaf (born April 30, 1997 in Tel Aviv ) is an American / Israeli basketball player . He has been part of the Indiana Pacers squad in the NBA since 2017 .
career
Leaf was born in Tel Aviv, Israel , and lived there for the first two years of his life. His father, Brad, who came from the United States , was a professional basketball player in Israel at the time. The family then moved back to the United States. Leaf grew to be a great basketball talent at Foothills Christian High School in the Californian city of El Cajon , and his father was his coach on the school team. In his last season at high school (2015/16) he averaged 28.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 3.2 ball wins per match.
Leaf moved to the University of California (UCLA) in Los Angeles for the 2016/17 game year . He had previously withdrawn his original acceptance from the University of Arizona . At UCLA, he immediately became a top performer and promptly caught the eye in his competitive game debut on November 11, 2016 against the University of the Pacific team with 22 points, 15 rebounds and four basket preparations. In the course of the season Leaf was on the UCLA starting line-up in all 35 games and recorded a team maximum of 16.3 points per encounter. He also collected 8.2 rebounds per game, which meant the second best value within the team. Steve Alford , the head coach of the university team, described Leaf as "a special talent" and highlighted, among other things, his qualities on the offensive with high accuracy when throwing from distance and the gift of putting his teammates in the limelight.
After his impressive first year at UCLA, Leaf decided to continue his career as a professional basketball player and thus to prematurely end his university time. He enrolled in the 2017 NBA Draft and was selected 18th in the first round of the selection process by the Indiana Pacers . As part of the NBA summer league, he made his debut in the Pacers shirt. Leaf was a newcomer to the NBA in 53 games for Indiana in the 2017/18 season and scored an average of 2.9 points per encounter. In his first year in the league, he revealed weaknesses in defense and difficulty coping with the body-hugging style of play in the NBA.
National team
In 2015 Leaf was appointed to the squad of the Israeli U18 national team, with which he participated in the European B Championship. During the tournament he recorded averages of 16.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per encounter and was named the best player in the European Championship. That same year, Leaf was also invited to a training camp for the United States U19 national team.
