TAFLIR is the abbreviation for the "tactical aviation radar 87" of the Swiss Army . The TAFLIR is used to support airspace surveillance .

procurement

Due to the topography of Switzerland, there are radar shadows into which the radar systems permanently installed on the mountains cannot “see”. For this reason, five mobile radar systems were procured in 1985 for a total price of CHF 254 million to improve the overall air situation in Switzerland and replaced the TPS-1E target assignment radar , 24 of which was in use.

technology

The TAFLIR is a modified version of the AN / TPS-70 radar from Westinghouse (now: Northrop-Grumman) for Swiss requirements . It uses a phased array antenna as primary radar , which reduces the emission of side lobes by more than 50% and thus reduces the vulnerability to anti-radar missiles and a secondary radar .

The radar uses phase-coded pulse compression to improve accuracy and resolution at distance. As an active protective measure against electronic countermeasures , the transmission frequency can be changed from pulse to pulse.

The heart of the TAFLIR is the rotatable antenna mounted on a truck. There are also various containers with radar electronics, operating terminals and cooling devices. Thanks to swap bodies that can be transported on vehicles, the TAFLIR can change its location within hours. The radar data from the TAFLIR is fed directly into the FLORAKO system.

commitment

In peacetime, a system is stationed near each of the military airfields in order to improve the representation of the air situation. Otherwise, the systems are stored in NEMP -protected caverns .

The TAFLIR system can be transported on roads (previously also on rails) and is ready for use within a few hours.

The TAFLIR system is used when the overall air situation is to be improved locally, e.g. B. as part of the World Economic Forum. A Mobile LW Radar Company is required to operate a system. All companies are subordinate to the Mobile Air Force Radar Division 2. This is part of the LW AT Brigade.

The extent to which such a system is viable in a war effort in which the first waves of attack are directed against such institutions (cf. Gulf War ) remains to be seen. In peace operations, however, TAFLIR does a good job, e.g. B. when used during the " WEF support mission".

The Austrian low-level detection radar (TER) can be viewed as a comparable system .
