The TEPIX (Tehran Exchange Price Index) is the leading share index in Iran . It includes all companies listed on the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE).

calculation

The TEPIX is a price index in which all stock companies of the Tehran Stock Exchange (TSE) are listed. It reflects the development of the entire Iranian stock market. The index level is determined solely on the basis of share prices and only adjusted for income from subscription rights and special payments. The weighting is based on the market capitalization of the listed companies. Corporate actions such as stock splits have no (distorting) influence on the index. The calculation is continuously updated during TSE trading hours, Saturday to Wednesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. CET ).

history

Historical overview

The TEPIX started on March 21, 1990 with a base value of 100 points. The private sector revived in the early 1990s when numerous companies nationalized during the Islamic Revolution in 1979 were privatized on the stock exchange . On September 25, 1996, the leading Iranian index closed at 2,156.96 points. The profit since March 1990 is 2,057.0 percent.

In 1997 and 1998 parts of the world suffered financial , currency and economic crises ( Asian crisis , Brazilian crisis , Russian crisis ). Investors in Iran had become nervous as a result of the crisis and there was an increased outflow of capital. On August 19, 1998, the share index closed at 1,472.90 points. The loss since the peak in September 1996 is 31.7 percent.

At the beginning of the 21st century, the Tehran Stock Exchange experienced a boom in stocks, mainly due to the privatization of Iranian state-owned companies, continued economic growth and high oil prices . On December 7th, 2002 the TEPIX closed for the first time above the limit of 5,000 points and on December 6th, 2003 for the first time above the 10,000 point mark. On August 4, 2004, the index ended trading at 13,882.39 points. The increase since the low of August 1998 is 842.4 percent.

The tensions surrounding the Iranian nuclear program and the election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as Iranian president led to increased capital flight from the country. In particular, the statements made during the election campaign about a revision of the privatization policy unsettled investors. On July 26, 2006, the stock market barometer closed at 9,029.72 points, which is 35.0 percent lower. After taking power, Ahmadinejad continued the policy of opening up the state economy, which had begun under his predecessor Mohammad Chātami . From the summer of 2006, the TEPIX began to rise again. On July 15, 2008, the index ended trading at a record high of 12,917.96 points. The profit since July 2006 is 43.1 percent.

In the course of the international financial crisis , which had its origin in the US real estate crisis in the summer of 2007, the share index began to decline again. From the third quarter of 2008, the crisis increasingly affected the real economy. As a result, share prices collapsed worldwide. On November 11, 2008 the TEPIX sank below the limit of 10,000 points with a closing level of 9,998.62 points. The stock market barometer reached a new low on March 29, 2009 when it ended trading at 7,955.40 points. Since July 2008 this corresponds to a decrease of 38.4 percent.

March 29, 2009 marks the turning point of the downward trend. From spring 2009 the TEPIX was on the way up again. On July 14, 2010, the index closed for the first time above the 15,000 point mark and on January 19, 2011 for the first time above the 20,000 point mark. On January 1, 2013, the Iranian benchmark index marked an all-time high with a closing level of 37,987.00 points. The profit since March 29, 2009 is 377.5 percent.
