The EL4 of the Trossinger Eisenbahn (TE) is an electric locomotive with the wheel arrangement Bo. It was manufactured by AEG in 1902 and used on the railway line from Trossingen station to Trossingen city .

The locomotive was parked in 1967. Since 1990, it has been almost restored to its original condition by various workshops and is still operational. It is considered to be the oldest operational electric locomotive in Germany and is used as a museum vehicle by the Freundeskreis der Trossinger Eisenbahn e. V. used for special trips.

history

Four years after the first railcars of the Trossingen Railway, the TE T1 and 2 , the company acquired a small two-axle locomotive in 1902. Her tasks were especially the shunting service in Trossingen city station and occasional freight train services from Trossingen city to Trossingen state station . With constantly increasing traffic, the existing vehicles could soon no longer handle the traffic, which led to the procurement of the TE T3 before the Second World War .

The locomotive was rebuilt around the 1930s. It received a pantograph and a different paint job. The locomotive was in service until 1967 and was stored in the Trossingen locomotive shed. Despite its short length, the buffers on one side had to be removed for this rear position. From 1990 onwards it was given its original paintwork and put into working order. The long shutdown times meant that insulation damage occurred due to leaking oil in the traction motors , which could only be repaired after repeated repairs. The locomotive has been running smoothly again since 2011.

The locomotive is from the Freundeskreis der Trossinger Eisenbahn e. V. used together with the T1 and the other surviving electric multiple units for special trips.

technical description

The electric locomotive was one of the first to be manufactured in Germany and had a centrally located, fully enclosed driver's cab with a pantograph on the roof and two flat stems that were sloping to the front and back. The pantograph with its lyre-shaped bracket was erected by spring force and pulled in with a cable. Later she received a pantograph.

The drive motors, which were arranged in a pawl bearing design , were controlled by a drive switch and a resistance control. The locomotive was braked by a mechanical grooved disc brake that acted as a spindle brake and an electrical resistance brake . Overloading the resistors had to be avoided when starting up. The grooved disc brake is strong and can lock the wheels.

Upon delivery, the locomotive was painted fir green. In 1930 it was painted red / ivory uniformly with the vehicles of the TE, at the time of its storage it was painted blue / ivory. It has had its original fir green paintwork again since 1990.
