Plan and section of the grave

The grave TT48 ( English Theban Tomb 48 = Theban grave no. 48 ) is located in the necropolis of el-Chocha in Thebes-West in Egypt . It dates back to the 18th dynasty and belonged to Amenemhet Surer , the head of the domain under Amenophis III. With a length of 63 meters, the unfinished grave is one of the largest private graves of this time.

dig

The tomb of Amenemhet-Surer is located to the east of tomb No. 178 and consists of four successive pillared rooms : a portico , a longitudinal hall, an inner hall and a fourth unfinished cult room. The portico with 2 × 10 fluted columns forms the southern entrance area of the tomb. The south wall shows the grave lord in adoration of the gods Geb , Nut , Isis and Osiris . In another scene, victims appear before Amenemhet-Surer and his mother Mut-tuj. The left and right narrow sides show Amenhotep III. while celebrating a harvest festival , sacrificing and worshiping the gods. On the north wall there are more scenes with Amenhotep III. shown. Amenemhet-Surer appears with fan carriers and servants offering presents before the king, who is sitting in a kiosk . Other scenes show the king slaying the enemies or statues of the king and Queen Teje at the dedication.

The transverse hall is adjoined by a longitudinal hall with two rows of ten papyrus bundle columns each . The subsequently inserted hall with 4 × 6 tent pole columns , which otherwise only appears in the Ach menu, is unique .

Amenemhet-Surer seems to be still alive during Amenophis III. to have fallen out of favor, as his grave was the victim of destruction ( name cancellation ).
