List of Theban tombs
The so-called Theban tombs are several hundred private graves and funerary chapels located in Thebes- West in Egypt between the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens . The entire area is divided into various necropolises : Dra Abu el-Naga , el-Chocha , al-Asasif , Deir el-Bahari , Sheikh Abd el-Qurna , Qurnet Murrai and Deir el-Medina .
In a narrower sense, the Theban graves are understood to be the larger and decorated graves of officials or the graves of the noble . The numbering of these 415 graves begins with TT , which stands for the English name T heban T omb . There are also around 50 graves that were described in older publications, but the exact location of which is no longer known. These tombs are numbered according to their respective necropolis (A for Dra Abu el-Naga, B for el-Chocha, C for Sheikh Abd el-Qurna and D for Qurnet Murrai). Several hundred smaller or undecorated graves do not have a TT number. They often follow individual excavators' own numbering.
The tombs in the necropolis date from different epochs: Old Kingdom , Middle Kingdom , Second Intermediate Period , 18th to 22nd Dynasty and 25th to 26th Dynasty. In the individual graves there are some very artistic wall paintings that are exemplary of ancient Egyptian art . However, most of these paintings are in poor condition today.
