The TW 601 is a prototype light rail vehicle that Üstra acquired in 1970 for the Hannover light rail system.

description

When the construction of the tunnels and the redesign of the tram network into a light rail network began in Hanover in 1965 , a new vehicle had to be developed because the cars previously used did not meet the requirements of light rail operations. The new vehicle should enable bidirectional operation, be able to serve high and low platforms and offer more comfort for passengers.

For testing purposes, Üstra acquired a six-axle prototype each from Linke-Hofmann-Busch (LHB, Salzgitter ), railcar 600, and Duewag ( Düsseldorf ), railcar 601 in 1970. These red / white painted vehicles were 2.5 meters wide and 19 , 5 meters long. This made them 15 to 30 centimeters wider than the trams used at the time. As a result, these prototypes were not allowed to meet in many places because the tracks were too close. Technically, both railcars differed in a few points so that the most suitable components could be selected for the series vehicles. Railcar 601 had some technical similarities with the railcars of the Mannheim type also manufactured by Duewag . Until 1975, the vehicles were mainly tested on line 14 between Oberricklingen and Kirchrode in regular service and parked after the first series car of the type TW 6000 was put into service.

Use as a museum tram

While railcar 600 was returned to the manufacturer LHB in 1978 and scrapped there in 1988, railcar 601 was transferred to Vancouver in Canada in 1975 . Siemens Canada wanted to use it as a demonstration vehicle here, but it never did. So it was turned off for 13 years. In 1988 he was sold to Edmonton , where he was used since 2005 in the Edmonton Radial Railway Society on their High Level Bridge line .

The Hanover Tram Association, which looks after the historic Üstra cars, asked Edmonton in 2013 whether the local association would be willing to part with the vehicle. With their consent, the friends' association began collecting donations for the costs of the return transport in the amount of 75,000 euros. After three years, the 11,000 km long transfer could be financed and on October 18, 2016 the vehicle arrived in Hanover at the Döhren depot.
