Tachilek ( Burmese တာချီလိတ် , BGN / PCGN : tagyileik) is a small town in Myanmar (Burma). It is located in the southeast of Shan State in the Golden Triangle . The Mae Nam Sai River separates Myanmar from Thailand . Across the river, in Thailand, is the city of Mae Sai . The landscape can be classified as predominantly hilly to mountainous, while a large part of the urban region was built on the valley floor.

population

Tachilek's population is made up of a variety of different ethnic groups. These include Burmese , Shan , Thais , Bangladeshis , Indians , Chinese , and members of regional mountain peoples.

Economy and labor market

The country, plagued by great ethnic differences, a military dictatorship and ongoing conflicts between local armies, is economically significantly weaker than neighboring Thailand. This creates opportunities for Tachilek, whose residents often commute across the border bridge every day to work or trade in Thailand. A few years ago, Tachilek was one of the main transshipment points in or main artery for drug smuggling to Southeast Asia. One of the reasons for this was a US foreign policy that supported the drug market, which was suddenly turned into the exact opposite in the 1980s. Substitute crops should help to keep the region stable. But food, water, machines, electronics - almost everything is bought in Thailand in order to sell it in Tachilek for a small surcharge. Much jobs are in the middlemen, runners and smugglers. Entering Myanmar with foreign vehicles of all kinds is very difficult, sometimes even impossible. Tachilek is also the supply center for much of Shan State.

Because of this border trade, which leads to a small but existing increase in the price of goods, and the lower wage level on this side of the border, one can certainly speak of worse living conditions than on the other side of the river - in Mae Sai. The standard wage of a commuter from Tachilek looking for a job in Mae Sai is currently (July 2006) of 2000 Thai Baht (around 40 euros) per month, which is significantly higher than the usual wage in Tachilek and at the same time below what a Thai would get for the same Would require work. The many traders from Tachilek mainly sell agricultural products, handmade jewelry and goods imported from China in Mae Sai. Prostitution also plays a role, especially because the border crossing is used by many tourists for visa extensions.

On 24 March 2011, a shattered earthquake of magnitude 6.8, the area in the region where Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, and also resulted in Tachilek considerable damage.
