Mae Sai ( Thai : แม่สาย ) is a "small town" ( Thesaban Tambon ) in the district ( Amphoe - administrative district) Mae Sai , the northernmost district of the Chiang Rai Province in the northern region of Thailand .

Mae Sai is about 62 kilometers north of the provincial capital Chiang Rai .

There are numerous mountains in the western part of the district, the most important of which is Doi Tung. On its top is the Buddhist temple Wat Phrathat Doi Tung . Tourists often use the border crossing, as well as the one in Mae Sot or Ranong , to extend their visa.

This is where the main border crossing from Thailand to Myanmar is located , where the Asian Highway AH2 crosses the Mae Sai (river) to the city of Tachilek in Myanmar. This is where Thanon Phahonyothin Road ends . The bus station, where the buses from Chiang Rai also end, is about 10 km south of the border. The border crossing can be reached by public transport.
