Tacinga braunii is a species of the genus Tacinga in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Portuguese common names are "Rabo de Rato", "Cipó de Espinhos" and "Rabo de Espinhos". The species has long been confused with T. funalis. It was not until 1987 that Pierre Josef Braun realized that it was still an undescribed species. In 1989 it was named in his honor.
description
Tacinga braunii grows spread out to lean on climbing, branches only slightly and reaches heights of 1.5 meters. The gray-green to reddish green, slightly flattened shoots are somewhat divided into segments. The bare segments are up to 30 inches long and 3.5 inches wide. The light brown areoles on it are covered with tiny, white glochids . There are no thorns .
The light greenish white flowers are 8 to 10 centimeters long. The narrow urn-shaped fruits are greenish and up to 4 centimeters long. They contain 3 to 4 seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Tacinga braunii is widespread in northeastern Brazil on island mountains in the caatinga vegetation at altitudes of 170 to 350 meters.
It was first described in 1989 by Eddie Esteves Pereira .
Tacinga braunii is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. endangered, classified. The classification was made on the basis of the very small distribution area of around 1500 km², the fewer than 10 known locations of the species and the emerging decline in species due to the destruction of habitat areas. The development of the population is seen as decreasing.
