Tadeusz Hołuj

Tadeusz Hołuj (born November 23, 1916 in Krakow ; † October 23, 1985 there ) was a Polish writer and Auschwitz survivor.

Life

Hołuj graduated from high school in Jasło and studied law and philology at the Jagiellonian University . Hołuj was co-editor of the literary magazine "Naszego Wyrazu".

In autumn 1939, Hołuj fought against the German invaders on the side of the Polish army after the attack on Poland by the Wehrmacht . After the German occupation of Poland , Hołuj was released from the Polish army. During a raid he was arrested in Warsaw and taken to Bavaria for forced labor . From there he was able to escape, return to Krakow and join a resistance group. In July 1942, Hołuj was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the main camp of Auschwitz at the beginning of September 1942 . Hołuj received prisoner number 62,937 and became a clerk and nurse in the infirmary. Along with Ernst Burger , Hermann Langbein and Józef Cyrankiewicz, Holuj was a leading member of the Auschwitz combat group . At the end of October 1944, Hołuj was transferred to a satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp in Leitmeritz and liberated there in April 1945.

After the war, Hołuj worked as a writer in Cracow and was involved in the Polish Workers 'Party and the Polish United Workers' Party . Hołuj became General Secretary of the International Auschwitz Committee in the mid-1960s and was a witness in the first Frankfurt Auschwitz Trial .

Hołuj also acted in the Auschwitz film The End of Our World, based on his novel of the same name, and worked as a screenwriter.
